Making noise

It is no secret we miss the park. The sound of skateboarding in the background was just part of going to EQ. Working there, I just became so accustomed to it. So last Wednesday night when I stayed late at work, I decided to invite two young bucks to skate in the hallway while I did some overtime. I figured they could use a session in a warm dry spot and the sound of skating might motivate me to get my work down quickly. It worked. I had intended of joining them, but I felt a cold coming on and my back was sore, so I just filmed them for a bit instead. I literally saw Emrik and Arturo grow up at the EQ skatepark, so it was good to have them just having fun, skating, and making noise at my work again.

So, me and Austin went to On Deck to skate the mini on saturday. It had been a while since we've skated some tranny so we definitely had a hard time skating it, but it still was a fun sesh!!

Jam Session @ Camp Fortune

Last Sunday En Equilibre, Top of the World, Fokus, and Republic Snowboards got together for this years first Jam session at Camp Fortune. A big thanks to Eric Gagne for making this all possible and creating the set-up for us to session all day. If you missed this one don't worry because there is another on February 26th from 12pm-4pm @ Camp Fortune. The whole day was a success with perfect weather and all the Fokus, EQ, Top, and Republic teams riding together. We gave out tons of free prizes through out the day for random best tricks on either the down box or flat down rail. Check out the video from the day and start getting hyped for the next session since its going to get bigger and better each time. The last part of this video is all snow-skating which has come a long way in the last few years but check out Phil Gray, Ron Tremblay, and Bjorn Weber as they take a couple laps. After watching it you'll want to go out and buy one too cause I know I will be as soon as i'm healed up. Watch as you see these guys with that look on their face of when we all started skating or snowboarding, that fresh start of everyone progressing together and only doing it for the pure fun of it.

ACROBAG @ EDELWEISS

The final stop of the Acrobag Progression Tour was held at Edelweiss last Saturday. Edelweiss, as always went above and beyond everyones expectations by building the best Acrobag set up on the whole tour. They had 3 seperate jumps leading into the Acrobag as well as a chilling area with picnic tables. The 50 x 50 Acrobag is unreal and allows for a lot more height,distance,corks,spins and entertainment. Joel Massariol was definitely the winner of the day and in my view the winner of this whole progression tour as he was able to progress enough to throw down a triple cork to seal the deal. On the other hand this whole progression tour wasn't really about snowboarding or skiing it has been about Phil Gray holding it down on his snowskate in which he finally found himself a "pair" to build up the courage to hit the Acrobag on his snowskate(Phil is the best). A big special thanks to Marc-Andre Tarte for putting this whole tour together and being an amazing guy to know and work with. ACROBAG @ CAMP FORTUNE

Last Saturday at Camp Fortune with the Acrobag Progression Tour was amazing! The weather was great, there were a ton of people, and things got pretty crazy. We all witnessed the first ever backflip on a GT into the Acrobag, along with some one-footed backflips on skis and snowboards, and a lot more tricks and bails to keep everyone entertained throughout the day. Shawn Naylor took home first in the game of P.I.G against everyone and took home the EQ skateboard deck as his prize of choice. Honourable mentions went out to Chandra, this girl was landing cork 9s on her skis and kept progressing all day with a smile on her face. This Saturday at Edelweiss is the next and last stop of the Acrobag Progression Tour so you know its going to be EPIC! I already saw pictures of the set up and there are 3 different jumps going into the 50x50 Acrobag. GET READY!

Behind the scenes for Tha-New-Coop movie

I've always been more behind the scenes or in the scenes when it comes to skateboarding but every once in a while I don't mind filming snowboarding for some homies. So I went out and met up with Ronald Tremblay, Sean Thomson, and EQ rider Bjorn Weber for the day while they seshed this kink rail in Ottawa. This was Bjorns first rail of the season, he's not one to back down from anything and always gives 100% on everything he does. He did it a couple times and although he didn't get the trick he wanted he kept a level head the whole time and will becoming back for more soon. A couple tricks were landed on this day but you're going to have to wait for Tha-New-Coop Movie to see them. Ron is on a mission this year motivating all Tha-Coop boys to film so you know its going to be good. Here's some random footage of the day and if you look closely you might be able to see one of Seans' tricks.

ACROBAG at Mont Ste Marie

Even though it was minus 30 out on Saturday the Acrobag Progression Tour still went ahead as planned and with a pretty good turn out considering the weather. Phil, Genny Ross(our new EQ Rider), and I headed up to Mont Ste Marie for the day to freeze and watch people huck themselves into this giant air bag. Instead of us complaining the whole day about how cold it was outside we got right to work setting up the tent, preparing the Acrobag, building an igloo, and creating the new EQ patented ICE box. For Phil this Progression Tour hasn't been about learning new flips off jumps but stepping up his game on his snow skate, killing the ICE box all day. As EQ gave out prizes for best tricks on the ICE box and the Acrobag the kids were getting themselves ready for the big contest of the day, a game of PIG against Marc-Andre Tarte. Congratulations to the big winner of the day taking home the EQ skateboard setup as his prize of choice. Wow, I dont even know where to start on this one. So much crazy stuff has happened, I feel lucky to be alive right now. Yesterday was the Mont St-Marie Acrobag tour stop, but more on that later...
J-F and I found some time to skate at On Deck on Jan. 4th. It was J-F's first time there and first time skating in a long time. This guy keeps himself way to busy doing art shows, teaching courses, building websites and other various projects, so it was fun to actually get him out skating, even if it was for only an hour or so.
I know you wish this was a vid of Seb or Ian but it aint.
Just two guys who like to skate and will never stop.

I can't wait to see the progression of snowboarding as the next generation of snowboarders are able to grow up practicing all their corks,rodeos,and flips into this bag without any consequences. Well, it is twenty twhellve and we are off to a slow start.

Ian is suffering from post concussion syndrome. This sucks for so many reasons, but he is being smart by resting and letting his brain heal. With any luck, one day he will be smarter than Nick again.

Seb is in Florida. he said something about finding this guy, but he is really just chillin with grandmamere, golfing, eating buffet, going to hockey games and smoking cigars.

And, working retail makes me a total write off for the holidays. Thankfully my kids provide me with the Christmas magic. So far I have; zero days on a snowboard, one trip to southparc, one session in a garage, and two times on a snowdeck. Not exactly what I was hoping for. Not a single photo or video to back that up either.

Things are happening all around us though, good things like this tribute Antique Skateboards posted for their Ottawa 2011 Top Ten list. Aaron Cayer also edited a four part video. They pretty much choked us up. Thank you to the Vulture for all the respect and love.

So, obviously we all miss the EQ skatepark and we at EQ miss all you bastards rolling around and making noise in the back, but I don't think this was the story of the year for Ottawa. Don't get me wrong, this list was amazing and really captured our year. But personally, the big story is the strength and energy of the community as a whole. Everybody just came together regardless of what shop or crew they roll with.

I just found out South-parc is closing it's doors and moving on Jan. 8th. They are being forced out by the building owners. This was not expected, but luckily they have found a temporary spot beginning Feb 1.
Beginning Jan 2nd they will begin dismantling the park. They will need help, so anyone willing to volunteer please contact them.

Thankfully this has not effected their plans to open a all new Super Park in the Fall of 2012.

Last Saturday Seb Labbe, Nimrod, Jon Pie and myself made the drive to Southparc. Seems like this will become a more frequent destination for a bunch of us this year. Brad KZ, Jay Highland and Matt Klein were also in attendence that evening.
This was my first trip there since last winter. I was kind of bummed that the thing I skate the most, the blue ramp, had been completely rebuild into something much gnarlier, but I was excited to try it and dropped in as soon as we got there.
It was busiest I had ever scene at Southparc, but we stuck it out until midnight. Nimrod never seems to get tired even though he is always hauling ass, Jon Pie is a skate machine, and Seb had fun as always. This was La Bamba's second visit this season. He had rolled down earlier this month with the Antique crew. Check it out.

I got pwned early, but I shook it off and tried to get used to the new megatron-bomb ramp. What at first seemed intimidating slowly became a little more fluid as the night went on. Now, I can't wait to go back, but next time it will be on a Thursday night in January, cause Shake Junt nights are...well just watch this.

Wassup Homies!!!

So, obviously it sucks not having the skate park anymore. Sadly, this was a case of not being able to afford it anymore. Rent kept going up, while sales in the store kept going down. This is a prime example of why it is so important to support the real local skateshops that actually support the community.

Shopping online and shopping at huge chains may save you a few bucks now, but it may also effect the local scene in ways we didn't think possible.

Next time you need some new kicks or some fresh wood, try to remember who was at your local park giving out prizes, or who organized the last contest or snow jam. Shops like EQ, Top of the World, Fokus and On Deck have all been giving back to the community for years and years. Please do not take them for granted.

I am not hating on anybody, I just want to remind you all how lucky we are to have such a good skateboard and snowboard scene in this area and that is because of these core shops that have stuck it out through thick and thin.

Anyways, back to my point...we have no more indoor skate park, but we are determined to still have FUN. So we decided to create this blog to share the adventures of 3 longtime EQ homies.

First off, our main man, Ian Gauthier will be heading up our snowboard crew, documenting all their shenanigans for your enjoyment. More on that later. Don't worry, he will be skating also!!

Seb Labbe, aka La Bamba, will be keeping us up to date on his travels down south, trips to SouthParc, Taz and other random spots. Plus, we are determined to drag him up to the slopes for some snowboarding!

And lastly and least importantly, I, Phil Gray, will be posting on my adventures trying to make time to skateboard, snowboard, snowdeck and be a good Dad.

So bookmark this page, cause we are just getting started.

Check out the archives to see a ton of old EQ skatepark videos. Bittersweet.

We can't wait to see everybody out there shredding and skating, it is going to be a FUN winter!!!

Contest Outline: The Circa Combat contest is a skate battle between 2-3 skaters skating the whole park at a time. The skaters will battle it out until the best overall skater is chosen to move on to the next round. The event will be followed by a best trick contest.
